Pat Sze, 44, Stroke

How would you explain having a stroke to a child?

Having a stroke is like your body wanting to do things but your brain won’t allow it.  You want to speak, or walk but you cannot because there is something paralyzing your braìn function.

What would you want the world to know about having a stroke?

I would like the world to know distinctive signs of a stroke.  Some of the telltale signs are sudden loss of speech and loss of motor function. Being able to recognize when someone is in distress can ultimately save someone’s life. Every second counts when dealing with a stroke.

What does it feel like to live with a post stroke?

Life after a stroke is very scary because stroke victims are prone to have more strokes.  I have to be very careful with what I eat and I have a lot of medicine that my health is dependent on as well as my overall well being.

What brings you joy?

As always my girls… They bring me joy and meaning and knowing I have them gives me a reason to take better care of myself. I want to be here for them and see them through all of their milestones.
