Maddie, Age 12, Food Allergies

How would you explain food allergies to a child?

I have food allergies to peanuts and many tree nuts. This means that I need to carry an epi-pen with me wherever I go and be aware of the foods/ingredients when I am eating anything new or prepared by someone else.

What would you want the world to know about food allergies?

Everyone’s allergies can be different. Some people have to worry about eating the allergen, while others might react through touch or smell.

What does it feel like to live with food allergies?

It’s kind of annoying because you have to always have to check that ingredients are safe and think about where you are going and what you are eating.

What brings you joy?

Reading, creating art, playing lacrosse, swimming and watching cooking shows.
