Le'alani Boykin, 38, Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder
How would you explain Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder to a child?
Depression is a disorder that affects your mood and causes you to feel sad most of the time, even when you may have a lot to be grateful for and happy about.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is another mood disorder that causes you to feel scared or nervous, even when you're perfectly safe.
What would you want the world to know about Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
I want the world to know that Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder are real, complex illnesses and don't have quick, easy fixes like "turning that frown upside down" or "taking it easy". It takes a ton of mental strength and endurance to learn how to live with and treat these illnesses.
What does it feel like to live with Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder?
I can be very tired for most of the day and not feel like doing things that I usually enjoy.
I can also feel like I have an invisible monster that follows me around and makes me feel scared about anything and everything. I can have trouble relaxing, making up my mind, and concentrating, which makes it difficult for me to complete tasks.
What brings you joy?
The love and support from my family and friends, nature, dancing, and my fluffy white cat.
